Bird Watching in Santa Catarina – 3, 5 or 10 days

9 nights / 10 days itinerary covering: Florianópolis, the State Park of the Tabuleiro Mountains (Baixada do Maciambú and São Bonifácio), Urubici and Itapoá.

The State of Santa Catarina has a great variety of birds combined with a fantastic scenery.

Florianópolis city with its environmental diversity of beaches, dunes, forests, wetland, lakes and swamps, keeps over 300 species that were already reported here. The inland and the mountains keep rare birds that can only be found here, like the Cinclodes pabsti, the Stymphalornis acutirostris and the Hemitriccus kaempferi.

The tours are guided by a bird specialist graduated in biology by the UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) and mastered in Ecology and Conservation by the UFPR (Federal University of Paraná). He has been working with birds in the south of Brazil for the last ten years.

1st day: Arrival at the airport, transfer & check-in at the lodge. Depending on the arrival time, birding on trails near the Lodge. Return to the Lodge. Dinner. Overnight.

2nd day: Early Breakfast. Drive North of the island before sunrise. This morning we will be birding on a Wetland area & a colony of heros Donacospiza albifrons, Emberizoides ypiranganus and Tangara peruviana among others.

We also expect to see the following birds: Donacospiza albifrons, Emberizoides ypiranganus, Tangara peruviana among others. Lunch in the area. In the afternoon we will drive to the center-east of the island to watch coastal sea birds like ducks, Pseudoleistes virescens. Return to the lodge. Dinner. Birding near the Lodge for owls. Overnight.

3rd day: Breakfast and drive to the center-east of the island before sunrise to watch the Slope Atlantic Forest. Several forest birds, specialist of the sub-forest and of the top of the trees, hawks, Ortalis guttat, hummingbirds, toucans Ramphastos dicolorus and Ramphastos vitellinus, Cyanocorax caeruleus, Chiroxiphia caudata. Lunch.

In the afternoon we will drive to the center-south of the island to watch several kinds of blowpipe, frigate, seagulls, and other coastal and wetland birds, among them the Rallus longirostris and the Agelasticus thiliu. Dinner. Overnight.

4th day: Breakfast and drive before sunrise to the State Park of Tabuleiro Mountains – Maciambú wetland to watch the wetland, humid fields, creeping vegetation, plain land vegetation. Ducks, hawks, Phylloscartes kronei, Manacus manacus and the Amblyramphus holosericeus.
Drive back to Florianópolis. Free afternoon.

5th day: Breakfast and drive before sunrise to the State Park of Tabuleiro Mountains – São Bonifácio mountains to watch the Slope Atlantic Forest, araucaria trees, foggy forest and highlands. Several forest birds, including specialist of the sub-forest and of the top of the trees, hawks, toucans, psitacídeos, hummingbirds, Aburria jacuting, Picumnus nebulosus, and the Carpornis cucullata.
At the end of the day, drive to Urubici. Arrival and check-in at the Lodge.

6th and 7the days: Breakfast before sunrise and drive to the araucaria forest and fields. We will watch the Amazona vinacea, the Amazona pretrei, the Caprimulgus longirostris, the Picumnus nebulosus, the Leptasthenura setaria, the Cinclodes pabsti and other highland birds. Lunch, dinner and overnight in Urubici.

8th day: Breakfast at 8 a.m. and 4 hours drive to Itapoá, in the north shore of Santa Catarina. We will arrive at the Volta Velha Reserve. Check-in at the posada. Birding in the trails near the Lodge for the Stymphalornis acutirostris and the Hemitriccus kaempferi.

9th day: Breakfast before sunrise, trails in the Reserve to watch the Atlantic Forest of plain land, wetland. Several forest birds, like the Stymphalornis acutirostris and the Hemitriccus kaempferi.

10th day: Breakfast before sunrise, trails in the Reserve to watch the Atlantic Forest of plain land, wetland. Several forest birds, like the Stymphalornis acutirostris and the Hemitriccus kaempferi. Drive back to the airport in Florianópolis in the early afternoon.

The itinerary includes:

  • 04 nights in Florianópolis at the Vila Tamarindo Posada (Garden room with private balcony with hammock, TV, small living room in the bedroom) with homemade breakfast;
  • 03 nights in Urubici at the Serra Bela Posada with breakfast, room with fireside, heater, TV, telephone.
  • 02 nights in Itapoá at the Volta Velha Reserve Posada. Rustic posada in one of the largest areas in the state of forest preservation. 287 species have been reported in this area.
  • Car rental;
  • Bird specialist will guide the tours. He will use playback equipment to attract the birds / reproduce the sounds.

The itinerary does not include lunch, dinner or any other items not mentioned on it.
